From the Classroom to Industry: How a Statistics Student Turns Data into Real Decisions

From the Classroom to Industry: How a Statistics Student Turns Data into Real Decisions

Behind every corporate decision that shapes the direction of a major company lies an invisible web of numbers, variables, and in-depth analytics. That is precisely what Carlos Emanuel Quinto León, a seventh-semester Statistics major at ESPOL, discovered when he immersed himself in the professional internship program at La Fabril S.A.

Founded in 1935, La Fabril is one of Ecuador’s largest and most established industrial and manufacturing leaders. Recognized across the region as a market leader in edible oils, fats, home cleaning, personal care, and baking supplies, the company drives highly competitive operations where precision in commercial data management is vital.

Assigned to the Revenue Growth Management (RGM) department, Carlos faced a daily challenge: transforming a vast ecosystem of commercial data, pricing, and costs into clear, actionable insights for brand managers.

The Power Behind Pricing: Balancing Markets and Costs

From his first weeks in Guayaquil, Carlos’s routine involved daily monitoring of supermarket portals to track both company and competitor pricing. However, his biggest challenge came when he led the development and adaptation of a cost-per-ton analysis.

Rather than simply reporting mathematical variations, Carlos implemented waterfall charts to break down cost increases or decreases across raw materials, packaging, chemicals, and royalties. As a result, he moved from merely stating "costs went up" to pinpointing the exact factors driving changes down to the SKU and sales channel level.

"I learned that working with data isn’t just about producing numbers—it’s about understanding what they mean and how they can help someone make a better decision," Carlos emphasizes.

From the University Classroom to the Real World

To execute these analyses, the intern combined critical thinking with cutting-edge tech tools like BigQuery, Looker, Python, and Power Pivot. However, he notes that his true compass for solving complex problems came from his academic training in ESPOL’s Statistics program.

Courses such as Data Engineering and Statistics I provided him with a structured framework to validate scattered data sources, organize information, and question the numbers before delivering a verdict. This adaptability allowed him not only to master new profitability metrics, but also to communicate fluently and independently in a demanding corporate environment.

Statistical Excellence as a Business Driver

Carlos Quinto’s experience at La Fabril S.A. reflects the core of our mission: educating exceptional statistical engineers who improve the world around us, supported by a highly qualified faculty with deep research and practical expertise.

At the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (FCNM), we guide and prepare our students through a well-rounded education grounded in rigorous academic standards. Cases like Carlos’s show how our faculty's work translates into professionals who can interpret data and make informed decisions that drive the country’s productive sector.
