FCNM Statistics Alumni Win the WiDS Datathon 2026 with a Predictive Model for Wildfires
The BIN team, made up of Laura Apupalo, Geovanny Gutiérrez, Fabricio Quinto, and Britney Rodríguez, alumni of the Statistics Engineering program at ESPOL’s Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (FCNM), earned first place in the WiDS Datathon 2026, a data science competition held last June at Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL).
The initiative is part of Women in Data Science (WiDS), a global movement led by Stanford University that promotes the participation and leadership of women in data science and artificial intelligence.
Professor Carlos Martín, Ph.D.: Recognized for Academic Excellence with the 2021 Extraordinary Doctoral Award
Professor Carlos Manuel Martín Barreiro, a distinguished faculty member of the Logistics and Transportation program at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (FCNM) at ESPOL, has been awarded the Extraordinary Doctoral Award in the field of Mathematical Sciences by the University of Salamanca. This prestigious recognition was approved by the University of Salamanca’s Governing Council during its regular session held on February 25, 2022.
ESPOL Student Drives Improvements in Logistics Processes Through an Internship
What began as knowledge acquired in the classroom soon became operational decisions, data analysis, and process improvement initiatives within a high-demand operation. For Paúl Alberto Segarra Varas, an eighth-semester Logistics and Transportation Engineering student at ESPOL’s Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, his internship in the Logistics Projects area of Tonicorp’s Raw Materials Warehouse in Guayaquil provided the opportunity to transform theory into solutions for real-world industry challenges.
