FCNM students are recognized for their contributions to research in Cuatriles Mayores

Our students are making their mark in research! Walter Guaño Vinueza, Alexsander Játiva Macías, and Jesús Urrucsaca Guaman received special distinctions during the Cuartiles Mayores ceremony. This prestigious event recognizes the most outstanding achievements in scientific research within the ESPOL community, and this year's edition honored work carried out during 2024.

Jesús, a Chemical Engineering student, and Walter, a Logistics and Transportation student, received a Certificate of Scientific Merit for their publications indexed in Scopus or Web of Science (WoS). Meanwhile, Alexsander, a Mathematics student, was awarded the Research-Oriented Merit Badge by Academic Track, granted to students who complete Research I and Research II with a minimum grade of 80%.

Jesús Urrucsaca’s project, titled “Framework for Scaling-Up Extraction Processes in Nutraceutical Beverages: A Simulation, Techno-Economic, and Environmental Analysis Approach,” was supervised by Professor Yris González. Meanwhile, Walter developed the article “Multi-Objective Optimization for Perishable Product Dispatch in a FEFO System for a Food Bank Single Warehouse,” under the guidance of Professor Aníbal Suárez.

“I was taking a Linear Optimization course when my advisor invited me to collaborate because I was interested in the subject,” Walter explained. He added that once he began conducting research, he discovered that it genuinely captured his interest. “I have always been very curious since I was a child, so it is something I would like to pursue in the future.”

Alexsander, who contributed to the project “Local Spectral Theory of Operators,” directed by Professor Elvis Aponte, is currently pursuing the M1 Mathématiques et Interaction (MINT) master's program at Paris-Saclay University, ranked first in the world for Mathematics according to the Shanghai Ranking 2021. He was selected through the International Master Scholarship program, which supports students with outstanding academic performance.

In addition, Alexsander is co-author of the paper “Bounded Variation, Bounded Joint Φ-Variation,” alongside Professor Mireya Bracamonte, which has been accepted for publication in The Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society.

At the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (FCNM), we proudly celebrate these student achievements. They reflect the value of early research training, dedicated faculty mentorship, and the scientific development opportunities that ESPOL promotes at the undergraduate level to foster talent and inspire future careers in science.
